 The Conservatives have announced a number of significant policies at Party Conference, aimed at reforming the “broken” Criminal Justice System.
A key announcement is the repeal of the Human Rights Act, replacing it with a British Bill of Rights, enabling the UK to rebalance laws in favour of public protection.
There’s a real sense of frustration amongst people that the Human Rights Act protects the criminal and stops law abiding citizens protecting their family and homes. I’m sure people will agree that this announcement will enable us to ensure the rights of the victim come first.
The Conservatives also announced tough measures to tackle alcohol fuelled antisocial behaviour, including:
· Giving local council’s the power to stop town centres being taken over by pubs and clubs;
· Giving local communities a right of veto over new licences;
· Late night problem premises paying more for licences, to pay for more policing
Anti Social behaviour is one of the biggest issues that people of Calder Valley raise with me. Additionally, having been on the beat with local police I’ve seen just how many incidents stem from both underage and excessive drinking. This is a huge step forward in tackling a real issue for our communities. |
